Abstract

The burden of cancer has been at steady increase worldwide and Azerbaijan is not an exclusion. The burden on death secondary to cancer in Azerbaijan constitutes 11% of deathes from all causes. The financial burden related to the managment of oncological diseases is also significant and adds to the immense social, psychological and emotional burden.

At the same time the cause and distribution of cancer by age, gender and geographical location is of interest for cancer specialists and public health authorities as this can help to develop preventive measures and/or implement targted interventions based on identified risk factors.

Many countries have introduced national or hospital cancer registries to collect and analyze the data related to cancer burden. This data can indeed serve the advancement of prevention and treatment results in countries where nation-wide data collection is available.
