Lack of donor organs impose restrictions on liver transplantation. In the United States, for example, 6,000 liver transplants are performed each year. However, more than 2,000 patients die each year because they do not receive liver transplantation. Liver transplantation from a live donor allows more patients to be transferred to the liver. Transplantation of the left lateral segment from the live donor to the recipient produces great success in pediatric patients. In addition, live liver transplants (CDCC) are associated with reduced mortality among recipients in need of liver.
