Acute poisoning among children in Azerbaijan Republic

Abstract

Acute poisoning among pediatric population continues to be a major public health problem in many countries.  Despite wide range of public awareness programs, the acute care hospitals continue to receive and treat increasing number of pediatric patients with various cases of acute poisoning. 

According to the literature, the followings are major causes of acute poisoning among children in western countries: pharmaceuticals (iron containing medications, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, paracetamol and per os contraceptives), domestic chemical products, including bleach, dishwashing compounds and desinfecting agents), alcohol containing drinks as well as garden plants and their seeds. 

In developing world, the pesticides, hydrocarbons as well as snake bites are the major causes of acute poisoning among pediatric population. This article will review the acute poisoning among pediatric patients in Azerbaijan.
